The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano Begins Construction of New Five-Story North Tower

Expansion to add more outpatient beds, expanded services, and increased focus on research

The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano† announces a $100 million expansion project that will add a five-story tower attached to the 116-bed hospital and better meet the growing needs of patients.

New additions in the North tower will include 56 private outpatient beds, more robotic surgery technology, a larger, dedicated suite for a medical research, a new education suite with an auditorium and new guest amenities.

"We realized we needed to expand because of the increased demand for our services," said Mark Valentine, president, The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano. "The new space will allow us to meet this need and continue to offer the medical quality and five-star service for which The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano has become known."

The new tower, with an anticipated completion date of May 2018, will add approximately 150,000-square-feet to the existing hospital footprint at 1100 Allied Drive, Plano. Ascension Group Architects developed the expansion plans with The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano's oversight.

The cardiac/pulmonary rehabilitation department will move into the new tower's first floor, quadrupling the space to include an indoor exercise track, additional exercise equipment and consultation areas. The first floor of the new tower will also include a 200-seat auditorium and meeting room suite. A business center for guests will be placed in the existing lobby. The existing restaurant and coffee/gift shop in the lobby will be remodeled.

The second floor will include four new surgical suites, bringing the hospital's total number of surgical suites to 10. The surgical waiting area will open to an atrium overlooking the first floor. Expanded physician conference rooms and a lounge will be on the second floor behind the surgical suites.

The new day surgery unit on the third floor of the tower will have 28 outpatient guest suites with private family areas.

Plans Include Space for Increased Emphasis on Medical Research
The existing research department will move into an enlarged area with offices, laboratories and work areas on the fifth floor. Research at The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano is backed by the expansive Baylor Scott & White Research Institute network, which has approximately 500 active research investigators experienced in drug, device and vaccine studies.

Since 2008, more than 2,827 guests of The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano have participated in clinical trials conducted through Baylor Scott & White Research Institute. Since that time, the hospital's research teams have completed more than 50 trials and have 80 active clinical trials.

Investigators have authored published works in major scientific journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, European Heart Journal, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Journal of American College of Cardiology, and The Journal of American Medical Association.
