In a time of increasing health care regulation, Robert Michalski has been tapped as chief compliance officer to lead the regulatory compliance efforts of Baylor Scott & White Health – the largest not-for-profit health care provider in Texas and one of the largest in the nation. Michalski brings extensive experience to the newly created organization resulting from the 2013 combination of Scott & White Healthcare and Baylor Health Care System (BHCS).
Michalski had been with BHCS since 2009 where he held several key positions, including vice president, chief compliance officer and privacy officer. In his new role with Baylor Scott & White Health, he is responsible for developing, implementing and enforcing guidelines that promote compliance with local, state and federal laws, as well as ethical behavior and established policies within the new organization.
"I want to create an environment that provides education for our staff regarding expected standards of conduct and that encourages reporting of potential matters of noncompliance," says Michalski. "With more than 34,000 employees, my goal is for every single one of them to know what is expected of them and be comfortable recognizing and reporting any potential compliance issues."
Michalski has a long history of building compliance programs that do just that. While at BHCS, he implemented an annual mandatory compliance training program for all employees and developed a new annual attestation to the Code of Ethical Conduct. Before joining BHCS, Michalski served as vice president and chief compliance officer for West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh for nine years. As the first compliance officer for the health system, he built the compliance and internal audit programs and department.
"Given the character and cultures of excellence of the two systems that came together to create Baylor Scott & White Health – along with our combined resources – I believe we can create a model for compliance and ethics that others will follow," says Michalski.
In addition to his role at Baylor Scott & White Health, Michalski is the chair for the Association of Healthcare Internal Auditors and co-chair of the Healthcare Compliance Council Exchange in North Texas. Prior to his work in Pittsburgh, he was a senior consultant with Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group's health care practice in Cincinnati.
