NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Driver Visits Transplant Patients at Baylor All Saints Medical Center at Fort Worth

NASCAR Driver Is Son of Baylor Liver Transplant Patient

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Tyler Young visited transplant patients at Baylor All Saints Medical Center at Fort Worth on Wednesday, Oct. 29. Young's father, Randy, who received a liver transplant at Baylor Annette C. and Harold C. Simmons Transplant Institute at Baylor All Saints Medical Center, joined his son to encourage patients who have received a transplant or are on the waiting list to keep fighting.

Tyler Young is a Rookie of the Year contender in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, and 14th in the championship driver point standings. Randy Young founded Young's Motorsports in 2009, the same year he had his liver transplant in October at Baylor.

To thank the transplant team for the care Randy Young received before and after his liver transplant, the Simmons Transplant Institute logo will adorn the No. 02 Chevrolet Silverado for the Oct. 31 race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.

Need for Liver Transplant Came Out of the Blue
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series rookie driver Tyler, 24, always expected to see his father, Randy, at the track whenever Tyler raced. Ever since age 9, when Tyler began racing Go-Karts, his father remained actively involved in Tyler's racing career. However, five years ago Randy's health unexpectedly faltered, and the entire family found themselves in a different type of race:  Randy needed a liver transplant to save his life.

In 2009, Randy received his liver transplant at Baylor Simmons Transplant Institute at Baylor All Saints Medical Center.

The need for a liver transplant came "out of the blue" recalled Becky Young, Randy's wife and Tyler's mother. In March 2009, Randy's blood work from a routine medical visit showed changes that caused concerns. He underwent a liver biopsy. Doctors found that Randy had primary biliary cirrhosis of the liver and he was immediately put on the transplant list. In October 2009, Randy underwent a liver transplant surgery. "When he opened his eyes in the ICU," recalls Becky, "his eyes were no longer 'yellow' and I broke out into tears. They saved my life as well as Randy's because without him, I don't breathe."

Randy and Tyler share a passion for NASCAR racing, leading Randy to found Young's Motorsports, based in Midland, TX.
