Baylor Scott & White Health Chief Legal Officer Honored by SMU Dedman School Of Law

In honor of his decades of achievement as an attorney and involvement in the Dallas community, Wm. Stephen Boyd, chief legal officer and corporate secretary for Baylor Scott & White Health, has received the 2014 SMU Dedman School of Law Distinguished Alumni Award for Corporate Service. Boyd, who oversees all legal and risk management functions for Baylor Scott & White Health, graduated with a juris doctorate from SMU Dedman School of Law in 1981.

"We are pleased to be able to recognize your extraordinary achievements and service, and thank you for the outstanding positive recognition you bring to the law school," said Julie Forrester, Dean ad interim and law professor at SMU Dedman School of Law, in a letter notifying Boyd of his award.

Boyd was in private practice in Dallas for more than 26 years prior to joining Baylor Health Care System as general counsel in 2007. His leadership and experience proved instrumental in the 2013 merger between Baylor and Scott & White Healthcare, which created the largest not-for-profit health care system in Texas and one of the largest in the nation. Upon completion of the merger, Boyd was named chief legal officer and corporate secretary for the newly formed organization, Baylor Scott & White Health.

While his legal expertise has proven invaluable to Baylor over the past seven years, his commitment to bettering the community and reaching out to those less fortunate is equally as impressive. He has been heavily involved with the Salesmanship Club of Dallas since 1996, serving on its board and as chairman of the board for both the Salesmanship Club Youth & Family Centers and SCY Charitable Properties. In addition, he has served on the board of trustees for Dallas Heritage Village.

"The reason I chose SMU Dedman School of Law was because of its outstanding reputation for corporate law both in Texas and around the nation," says Boyd. "So to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award for Corporate Service from such a highly thought of institution is definitely a career highlight, and something by which I'm extremely humbled."

A Texas native, Boyd has long been committed to furthering the legal profession. He is a longtime member of the Committee for Qualified Judiciary and the executive board of SMU Dedman School of Law. He was honored with the other 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients on March 27 at the Belo Mansion.
