Baylor Carrollton Cancer Program Recognized for Quality

Oncology nurse navigator, new breast cancer support group available for patients

Baylor Medical Center at Carrollton is adding a breast cancer support group to its cancer care offerings just weeks after receiving an important quality accreditation.

The kickoff meeting of the breast cancer support group will give survivors and patients an opportunity to learn about advances in breast cancer care.

The meeting will be 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at Baylor Medical Center at Carrollton's conference room #1 (first floor). The hospital's address is 4343 N. Josey Lane, Carrollton, TX 75010. Call 1-800-4BAYLOR (422-9567) for reservations.

"This support group has an educational goal, plus I hope the participants will network with each other as they feel comfortable," said Aimee Lanier, RN, BSN. Lanier, Baylor Carrollton's oncology nurse navigator, will offer experts on nutrition, new cancer therapies, physical therapy, cosmetics and even on the therapeutic benefits of yoga at future meetings.

Lanier joined Baylor Carrollton in July 2014 as the hospital's first oncology nurse navigator. "I'm not the person who knows everything but I can find the resources," she said. "I'm a bit like a concierge because I know how to direct people to the support services, medical expertise or other services they may request during a cancer journey."

Lanier has been an oncology nurse for more than 20 years, primarily at Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH) facilities. To reach Aimee with questions about nurse navigator services at Baylor Carrollton, call 972-904-0782.

Commitment to Quality: Commission on Cancer Accreditation

Having a full-range of oncology services, such as nurse navigator services, helped Baylor Carrollton earn a three-year accreditation from The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The accreditation signifies Carrollton's commitment to meet rigorous standards and improve the quality of care for cancer patients. The hospital officially received the accreditation February 26.

Receiving care at a CoC-accredited cancer program provides patients access to:

  • Comprehensive care, including a range of advanced services and equipment.
  • A multi-specialty, team approach to coordinate treatment options.
  • Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options.
  • Cancer-related information, education and support.
  • A cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up.
  • Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care.
  • Quality care close to home.

There are about 1,500 CoC-accredited cancer programs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, including nearly 30 percent of hospitals. These CoC-accredited hospitals diagnose or treat 70 percent of newly diagnosed cancer patients. BSWH has 10 CoC-accredited cancer programs.
