Back by Popular Demand – Baylor Tom Landry Triathlon

Triathletes race through the heart of Dallas

After a 7-year hiatus, the Baylor Tom Landry Triathlon attracted 337 participants who swam, biked and raced their way through the heart of Dallas.

Competitors in the April 19 event competed in a 400-meter pool swim and a 15-mile bike ride and 5K (3.1-mile) run that took them through historic and scenic areas in and around downtown Dallas. The event is the only triathlon that takes place entirely within the city limits of Dallas.

Children got in on the fun too, with a scaled-down Sunny Kids triathlon for competitors ages 6-10 and 11-15 Saturday, April 18, that attracted nearly 200 youngsters who swam, biked and raced abbreviated routes based on their age group.

The triathlon, which started and ended at the Baylor Tom Landry Fitness Center, included some familiar faces and names from around Dallas, including: Dallas Police Chief David Brown, Dallas Independent School District Police Chief Craig Miller and Captain Russell Batchelor with the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department. The Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH) wellness program also was well represented by 10 employees chosen from the entire BSWH system to be on a triathlon team.

Hunger, Young Adult Heart Health Are the Big Winners

The event benefits the hungry in our community—people forced to go without enough to eat due to economic circumstances. Out Hunger, a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to help groups work together to end hunger, uses events such as the Baylor Tom Landry Triathlon to raise money and awareness to provide people in our community reliable access to food.

Children benefited from the event too. In conjunction with the triathlon, young people between the ages of 12-22 got free heart screenings. The test helps screen for heart abnormalities that may lead to sudden cardiac arrest—the number one cause of death for young people in that age group that often comes with no warning signs. Thanks to the Living for Zachary foundation The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano and The Heart Hospital Baylor Denton, for providing this important test.
