Notice: Emergency Department Patient Information May Have Been Compromised
On June 6, 2013, Baylor All Saints Medical Center at Fort Worth (“BASMC”) was made aware that a former employee had received text messages that contained health information on her personal mobile device that were forwarded from a BASMC pager. The pager was assigned to the individual during her previous employment at BASMC in order to carry out certain job related duties, and the pager’s text message copy forward feature was enabled during that time. Upon learning about the incident, Baylor immediately initiated actions to disable the copy forward feature on all pagers where the copy forward feature was enabled to a personal mobile device. Furthermore, Baylor conducted an investigation to determine which patients were affected and what information was included in the pager’s message.
Baylor’s resulting investigation revealed that the unauthorized disclosure occurred during the period from May 7, 2013, to June 6, 2013, and was limited to first and last name, bed location in the Emergency Department, and information that the patient was being admitted to the hospital.
The information contained in the message did not contain any financial information, such as social security numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers or insurance identification numbers.
While we have no evidence that personal information has been misused as a result of this incident, we still suggest that you regularly review your medical bills (including your “Explanation of Benefits” statements) to check for charges you do not recognize. Baylor can also provide details on other steps you may wish to consider, including information on how to place a fraud alert on your credit file, although once again no financial or credit information was included in the pager’s message.
Please be assured that we have taken steps to further protect our patients’ information, including disabling the copy forward feature for pager text messages going to any personal mobile device.
