The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano Earns Top Rating for Cardiovascular Care

Three-star rating from Society of Thoracic Surgeons recognizes high quality patient care

The Heart Hospital Baylor Planoenters 2016 with a rare and valued quality achievement, recognition by The Society of Thoracic Surgeons as a three-star quality program in coronary bypass surgery (CABG), aortic valve replacement (AVR) and aortic valve replacement and coronary bypass grafting (AVR+CABG). A three-star rating is the highest achievable and those three procedural groupings are the only one where such ratings are awarded.  Only one percent of the 1013 cardiac surgery hospitals in the United States reporting to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons' registry received three-star ratings in all categories based on the Society's quality methodology.

The Society registry receives and analyzes data from member hospitals on a yearly basis, those data documenting avoidance of mortality and major complications, post-operative outcomes, and the use of data-driven processes and medications to positively impact outcomes. The three-star rating is the pinnacle of recognition for a cardiovascular program and the three-star rating in all three categories is particularly rare and noteworthy.

"Achieving the three-star ratings tells our patients and referring physicians how seriously and consistently the clinical staff pursue and achieve quality care," says Bruce Lytle, M.D., chairman of cardiovascular strategic development and planning for cardiovascular medicine and surgery at The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano.

Founded in 1964, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons is an international not-for-profit organization of cardiothoracic surgeons, researchers and other health professionals.  The Society's mission is to enhance the ability of cardiothoracic surgeons and their teams to provide high quality patient care through research, advocacy and the education of both the public and health care providers.  The Society founded the data registry to monitor and analyze data involving surgery of the heart, lungs, esophagus and chest to identify best practices and improve patient outcomes.  The achievement of these latest ratings helps to reinforce The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano's reputation as a national leader in cardiac care.
