Cancer Care Services At Baylor Health Care System Medical Centers Expand Portfolio Of National Recognitions

Several Baylor Health Care System medical centers have achieved what few other hospitals in North Texas have: accreditation by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Commission on Cancer (CoC). Accreditation by the CoC indicates that a cancer program provides quality care as measured against national standards, and continuously strives to address each patient’s needs while improving outcomes.  Baylor Health Care System medical centers with CoC accreditation stretch across North Texas and include:

  • Baylor All Saints Medical Center at Fort Worth
  • Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center, Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas
  • Baylor Medical Center at Garland
  • Baylor Medical Center at Irving
  • Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie
  • Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine
  • Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano

Baylor Medical Center at McKinney, which recently opened, and Baylor Medical Center at Carrollton are working toward this accreditation as well. “Commission on Cancer accreditation is indicative of programs that meet or exceed nationally recognized benchmarks for quality cancer treatment,” says Alan Miller, MD, PhD, director, Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas, Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, and chief of Oncology, Baylor Health Care System. "We're proud that so many of our facilities have earned this accreditation."

In more than three decades of providing cancer care services, Baylor Sammons Cancer Center and other Baylor Health Care System medical centers have treated more than 100,000 patients facing a wide range of cancers.

In addition to CoC accreditation, Baylor Garland’s Breast Center was recently granted a three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC)–another ACS program. The hospital joins Baylor breast centers in Dallas, Fort Worth, Grapevine, Irving, and Plano that have also achieved this distinction.

“Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to centers that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of breast care,” says Laura Siciliano, CTR, RN, OCN, manager, Baylor Health Care System Cancer Registries. “Accredited programs must undergo an extremely rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance, and demonstrate compliance with the high standards established by the NAPBC for treating women with breast disease.”

During the survey process, the center must demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease.  The standards include proficiency in the areas of: center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.  A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offering its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease.

Baylor is building on its comprehensive cancer care program with this year’s phased opening of Baylor Cancer Hospital, which began in January. It is the only freestanding inpatient cancer hospital in North Texas. Additionally, Baylor’s cancer program extended its reach into McKinney with the opening of Baylor Medical Center at McKinney in July, and, for the past year, Baylor has been working toward building a robust cancer care program at Baylor Medical Center at Carrollton.

“Cancer remains one of the greatest medical challenges that we face,” says Dr. Miller. “The resources that we’ve committed and the national recognitions that we’ve earned, show that Baylor is a local, regional and national leader in the fight.”
