U.S. News Ranks Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas #1 in Dallas/Fort Worth

Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas is ranked #1 in the Dallas/Fort Worth area in the U.S. News & World Report annual Best Hospitals rankings released today. The hospital, which has been on the U.S. News & World Report‘s rankings for 20 years, was ranked nationally for six medical specialties: gastroenterology, nephrology, orthopedics, pulmonology, urology, and gynecology. The complete rankings and methodology are available at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals.

“We are proud of the physicians on our medical staff and our employees, and this is further evidence that they provide patients with some of the nation’s highest quality health care,” said John McWhorter, president of Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.

“Our employees and the physicians on our medical staff are dedicated to our patients we serve 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Irving Prengler, M.D., chief medical officer of Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas and associate chief medical officer of Baylor Health Care System. “It is a wonderful honor that Baylor University Medical Center is acknowledged for this dedication and excellent care that our health care team provides.”

In its Metro Area Rankings, U.S. News & World Report gives consumers information about high-performing hospitals in their backyard. This year, U.S. News & World Report ranked five Baylor Health Care System hospitals: Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano, Baylor All Saints Medical Center at Fort Worth, Baylor Medical Center at Irving, Baylor Medical Center at Garland, and Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. Once again this year, Baylor Health Care System has more “Best Hospitals” on the metro list than any other health care system in Dallas/Fort Worth.

“The number of Baylor hospitals on the list shows the strength and breadth of the Baylor Health Care System,” said Joel Allison, president and CEO, Baylor Health Care System. “It is proof of our commitment to provide advanced, quality care to all the communities and patients we serve.”

This year’s Best Hospitals, the 23rd annual edition, showcases more than 720 of the nation’s roughly 5,000 hospitals. Fewer than 150 are nationally ranked in at least one of 16 medical specialties. The rest of the recognized hospitals met a standard of performance nearly as demanding in one or more specialties.

The hospital rankings, said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow, are like a GPS-type aid to help steer patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges. “All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care,” said Comarow. “They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases.”

The rankings were published by U.S. News in collaboration with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Highlights of the 2012-13 rankings will appear in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2013 guidebook, to go on sale in August.
