Baylor Health Care System's Unique Diabetes Institute In South Dallas Marks Its First Anniversary

Hear how The Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute, called a new possible model for the care of diabetes nationwide, has impacted South Dallas

One year ago this week, the City of Dallas and Baylor Health Care System re-opened South Dallas' Juanita J. Craft Recreation Center as the area's first and only Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute. Baylor invested $15 million into the initiative with the mission of saving lives through a new model of care that could ultimately influence the way our country approaches chronic disease.

The Institute uniquely focuses on prevention, wellness and improving the overall health of the South Dallas community. It offers a clinic staffed by physicians, nurses, care coordinators and diabetes education specialists. It also offers cooking and exercise classes, affordable medications and other medical supplies, as well as a farmers market selling fresh foods.

Residents in South Dallas' 75210 ZIP code are three-times more likely to die from diabetes-related complications than those living in Dallas as a whole. Across the country, diabetes is an epidemic that accounts for one-in-five health care dollars spent. If it continues at its current pace, one-in-three Americans will be diabetic in the next 10 years.
